Keir Starmer has resigned as Andy Burnham looks set to become the next PM – follow live.
Andy Burnham has been sworn in as an MP hours after Keir Starmer confirmed he is quitting as Prime Minister following a brutal rejection from his own MPs.
The Prime Minister defended his record, pointing to his economic plans, falling NHS waiting lists, workers’ rights reforms, a fall in small boat crossings and his social media ban for children.
Sir Keir claimed Britain’s reputation on the global stage has been “restored”.
But he admitted Labour MPs didn’t want him to lead the party anymore.
And Mr Burnham has arrived in London after boarding a train from Manchester, with the former Mayor of Greater Manchester effectively set to receive a Coronation as Prime Minister.
He dodged questions over whether he would call a General Election when questioned over the issue, saying: “I think you’re jumping several hurdles there. My priority is to be sworn in as the MP for Makerfield.”
