The BBC have confirmed they have been forced to change their schedule for Monday night due to their coverage of the World Cup. The tournament is currently taking centre stage in the football world, with the United States, Canada and Mexico co-hosting the event.
In the UK, ITV and the BBC have the broadcast rights for the World Cup and will continue to do so throughout the tournament.
Monday night sees another busy day of group stage fixtures with matches taking place throughout the night, and as a result, the BBC have been forced to change their schedule.
The announcement comes on the same day that Sir Keir Starmer announced his resignation as Prime Minister.
“The News at Six and Ten has been rescheduled today because of the World Cup,” the BBC announced in a statement.
“We’ll have live coverage on BBC One all afternoon with the latest on the PM’s resignation, plus BBC News Specials at 16:30–17:30 and 20:30–21:30, presented by Sophie Raworth from Downing Street.”
The BBC will be broadcasting two World Cup matches on Monday evening, starting with Argentina vs Austria, which kicks off at 6pm. This game will see Lionel Messi take centre stage once again following his hat-trick in the country’s 3-0 win over Algeria in their opening fixture.

Live coverage on the BBC gets underway at 5.30pm, which is when the BBC News special is now scheduled to come to an end.
There will then be a break from live World Cup action on the BBC, but it will resume again at 9.30pm for the pre-match build-up for France vs Iraq, with kick-off scheduled for 10pm.

The announcement from the BBC has led to some reaction on social media. “Ultimate triumph of football over politics,” one fan wrote.
Another added: “Making way for Messi – it’s all about No.10 today.”
One more fan stated: “Why bother? Put it all on BBC2 and leave BBC1 alone.”
The BBC will also have the broadcast rights for England’s next group game in the World Cup as they take on Ghana on Tuesday night.
It was ITV who broadcast the Three Lions’ 4-2 victory over Croatia in their first Group L fixture of the tournament, and will do so again when England face Panama in their final group game on Saturday.
