Gareth Thomas, the Welsh rugby icon, is no stranger to challenges. Having made history as the first openly gay professional rugby player back in 2009, he’s faced more than his share of public scrutiny. But despite everything, Gareth’s love for his husband Stephen remains unwavering — and they’ve just shared a series of intimate, powerful photos that not only capture their deep connection but also highlight the painful stigma Gareth still faces due to his HIV-positive status.
The 51-year-old former Wales and British & Irish Lions captain, who bravely came out as HIV positive in 2019, continues to face societal prejudice. Though his HIV status is undetectable — meaning he cannot transmit the virus — Gareth reveals that the stigma remains ever-present, especially in public spaces.
In a series of tender photos posted on social media, the couple is seen locking lips, their love undeniable despite the challenges they face. Yet behind these sweet images lies a stark reality: Gareth still experiences uncomfortable reactions from others, even after years of campaigning for HIV education and awareness.
“I can’t help but notice it,” Gareth shared, speaking about the subtle — and sometimes not-so-subtle — ways that others still shun him in everyday settings. “It’s happened enough times that now, I expect it. People will walk out of a restaurant, or avoid sharing a drink or even shaking my hand. Even though I know that I am undetectable and can’t pass on HIV, it still happens. It’s the one thing that frightens me when I’m out in public.”
The emotional toll of this ignorance is clear. Gareth, who continues to fight for greater HIV awareness, explained how difficult it can be to gauge whether a space will be welcoming or not. “Every time I walk into a restaurant, I find myself assessing the situation, wondering if this will be a place where I feel comfortable.”
But even in the face of such challenges, Gareth and Stephen’s bond only grows stronger. Their journey together — celebrated in a heartfelt anniversary post earlier this year — stands as a testament to love’s resilience. “Eight years ago today, I married the most amazing human being I could ever wish to meet,” Gareth wrote. “Even on bad days, he makes me smile. I love you so much, Stephen.”
While the rugby legend has faced personal struggles, including a legal dispute with a former partner, Gareth remains steadfast in his commitment to mental health and his family’s well-being. He settled a legal case involving his HIV status in 2021, choosing to prioritize peace over further conflict, explaining, “This decision was for my own mental health and that of my family.”
Through it all, Gareth’s courage in the face of adversity continues to inspire. His message is clear: love, no matter the stigma, is a force that can’t be shaken. These powerful images of Gareth and Stephen sharing a kiss serve as a reminder of the love and strength that thrives even in a world still learning to fully accept those who are different.
