SIX children have drowned in just 72 hours across Spain sparking an urgent warning for tourists with kids.
One expert lambasted a “tragic lack of supervision” and warned holidaymakers to keep an eye on their kids at beaches and in pools.
Sebastián Quintana, an expert in drowning prevention, said that the “tragic locations” of the six deaths were Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Andalusia and the Canary Islands.
In nine out of ten cases, the parents were absent while their child drowned, said Quintana.
He warned that: “The lack of attention, supervision, or even absence at the bathing area by the adults in charge is the main cause of these human tragedies.
“A child won’t scream for help. Drowning is a very quick and silent event.”
The warning comes as a four-year-old British girl died yesterday on a Spanish holiday island after drowning in a hotel swimming pool.
The youngster was pulled from the water at 1:30pm at the resort in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote.
A helicopter, ambulances and police swarmed to the scene – but sadly their efforts to revive the little girl were unsuccessful.
Another British four-year-old also drowned after falling into a pool at a holiday home near the Costa del Sol.
Cops, paramedics and a helicopter were deployed to the family home after the alarm was raised at 8:30am on June 17.
But tragically they were unable to save the boy’s life.
He was reportedly the only son of a couple holidaying at their farmhouse in the village of Periana in eastern Malaga.
In another heartbreaking accident, a three-year-old Danish boy also died after nearly drowning in a Majorca swimming pool yesterday afternoon.
The child had climbed the pool steps and plunged into the water at a rental property in Can Picafort, Santa Margalida.
He was rushed to hospital after medics managed to resuscitate him at the scene.
But a severe lack of oxygen caused irreversible damage – and the young boy later died in hospital.
And in another devastating accident, three teen boys were killed after disappearing from Arrabassada beach in Tarragona.
Six friends had gone swimming on the golden sand beach on Friday – but only three returned from the water.
One boy, 12, died on the scene after almost 45 minutes of CPR.
His two companions, both 13, died in hospital over the weekend.
Tarragona City Council decreed three days mourning on Saturday for the tragic deaths of the three boys.
Police have launched investigations into each of the children’s deaths.
