Nigel Farage faces ethics investigation over £5million gift from cryptocurrency tycoon! QT

NIGEL Farage is being investigated by Parliament’s sleaze watchdog for failing to declare a £5million gift before he became an MP.

The Reform leader has come under pressure over the massive sum bunged to him by cryptocurrency tycoon Christopher Harborne.

Now the Standards Commissioner Daniel Greenberg has opened a probe into whether he broke the Commons’ code of conduct.

Mr Farage has denied any wrongdoing and a spokesman said he “looks forward to this being put to bed once and for all”.

He has maintained that he did not need to declare the £5million because it was given to him before he was elected MP for Clacton in July 2024.

The Reform chief, who is favourite to win the next election, said the money was “unconditional” and intended to pay for his round-the-clock security.

Rules state that MPs must declare any “financial interests” from the 12 months before they enter Parliament.

Mr Farage’s political opponents have seized on the £5million as ammunition to attack him.

Labour’s chair Anna Turley said today: “Nigel Farage has been avoiding legitimate questions since news of his billionaire backer’s ‘gift’. It’s right that he faces a proper investigation.”

The Tories’ Kevin Hollinrake said: “£5million is an enormous amount, more than most people will earn in a lifetime.

“Nigel Farage needs to explain how he got it, why he got it, and why he didn’t declare it.

“If there is a simple answer then he should welcome these investigations. But like so often with Reform, there is something very fishy about the whole story.”

A spokesman for Mr Farage said: “He has always been clear that this was a personal, unconditional gift and no rules were broken.”
