Jimmy Kimmel has faced backlash after a controversial joke at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner parody, where he referred to Melania Trump as an “expectant widow” just days before gunshots rang out at the event.
The comedian, known for his sharp humor, poked fun at the First Lady by saying, “Our First Lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow,” during a parody skit on Thursday evening. The joke, which mocked her appearance, left many stunned as it followed with another punchline, “Melania’s birthday is on Sunday. She’s planning to celebrate at home, looking out a window, whispering, ‘What have I done?’”
Kimmel’s joke drew sharp criticism from many, with conservative voices leading the charge. Larry O’Connor, editor of Townhall, called Kimmel a “broken man” and questioned his moral compass. “You have a problem, @disney,” he posted on X, while another user expressed disgust, calling Kimmel “evil” and accusing him of showing “seething hatred” toward Trump.

As the dinner unfolded, chaos broke out when loud noises interrupted the event. Secret Service agents quickly swarmed the ballroom after shots rang out, sending tuxedoed and evening-gown-clad guests ducking for cover. The incident occurred at the same venue where President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981, adding an eerie layer of historical significance to the already tense situation.
President Trump, in attendance for the first time as president, was escorted to safety, while the First Lady, Melania, was also quickly taken out of harm’s way. The shooter, later identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old teacher from Torrance, California, had breached a security checkpoint, armed with a shotgun, handgun, and knives.

Despite the terrifying moments, Trump appeared on national television just hours later, addressing the public from the comfort of his tuxedo, praising the Secret Service officer who was injured but was expected to recover. He declared defiantly, “When you’re impactful, they go after you,” in the aftermath of the attempted attack.
The event has raised more than just safety concerns, with commentators pointing out the unsettling coincidence of Kimmel’s “expectant widow” joke. Many critics believe his remarks, made in jest, were in poor taste, particularly in light of the violence that followed at the very same event.
The White House confirmed that the dinner would be rescheduled within 30 days, promising an even bigger and better gathering for Washington’s elite. For now, Washington remains on high alert as officials investigate the shooter’s disturbing manifesto, which was uncovered after the attack. His family had alerted authorities, but the tip came too late to prevent the chaos.
This shocking episode has left people questioning Kimmel’s timing and the increasingly polarized state of political humor in America.
