Three years after stepping away from the spotlight, former This Morning host Phillip Schofield has opened up about the “utterly brutal” period following his affair scandal — a chapter from which he admits there was “no way back.”
In May 2023, Phillip stepped away from ITV, his career and reputation left in tatters after revelations of an “unwise, but not illegal” relationship with a younger colleague. The scandal also cost him his long-term friendship with Holly Willoughby, who cut ties completely, leaving Phillip to face the fallout largely alone.
Phillip first met the individual involved as a teenager at drama school, though the affair did not begin until years later. Reflecting on the years since, the former Dancing on Ice host says he has embraced a quieter, more private life:
“I decided a while ago that I just wanted a quiet life with family, friends I can trust and my dog.”
On the emotional toll of the past few years, he admits:
“The past few years were, as you know, utterly brutal on so many levels and I came to terms with the fact that there was no way back.”
Despite the upheaval, Phillip has retained the support of his daughters, Molly, 32, and Ruby, 29, who have stood by him through the scandal. Molly told Channel 5:
“When my dad came out, it was… very hard for me, it was very hard for the entire family — mainly my mum, of course. But we talked through it, and over time it’s got easier. We will always continue to support him no matter what.”
PR expert Mayah Riaz adds perspective on the public fallout:
“Phillip Schofield’s situation is complicated as it still makes people feel a bit uncomfortable because it sits in that grey area between a genuine wrongdoing and a very public unravelling. Holly Willoughby was collateral damage — placed in an impossible position where any reaction would be scrutinised.”
Phillip’s reflections show a man who has stepped back from fame, seeking calm and connection after years of scrutiny and drama. His days are now largely private, a sharp contrast to the high-profile career that once made him a household name. Yet amid the scandal and lost friendships, the enduring support of his family remains a pillar of stability.
