Barry Manilow, the legendary singer, was spotted in public for the first time since he was forced to cancel his shows due to his ongoing battle with cancer. The 82-year-old star, best known for hits like Copacabana and Mandy, appeared in high spirits despite his recent health struggles. Manilow has been recovering after undergoing surgery for stage one lung cancer, which forced him to postpone and cancel several performances, including those scheduled for his Las Vegas residency.

His health troubles began last November, following bouts of bronchitis and hip pain. An MRI revealed a concerning spot on his lung, prompting surgery to remove the cancerous nodule. After spending a week in the ICU, he was declared cancer-free but still faced challenges in regaining his voice.

In a candid interview with The Times in March, Manilow shared his frustrations with his recovery process. “I tried to sing my show, but I haven’t been able to make it to the end without getting so winded that I have to stop,” he confessed.
Despite these challenges, Manilow appeared upbeat as he was seen stepping out in New York City, looking stylish in a chic black leather jacket, matching pants, and designer sunglasses. The sighting came as a welcomed update for fans who had been concerned about his health after he had to take a break from performing to focus on recovery.
Manilow first revealed his diagnosis in December 2025, telling fans he would undergo surgery to remove a spot on his left lung. He reassured everyone that the doctors did not believe the cancer had spread and that he would not need chemotherapy or radiation. “I was lucky it was discovered early,” he wrote on Instagram.
The Grammy-winning artist, who had been a longtime smoker before switching to vaping, also explained that the surgery was prompted after he was suffering from two bouts of bronchitis. Despite being back on stage at his Las Vegas residency, his doctor insisted on an MRI, which led to the discovery of the lung nodule. “Even though I was back on stage, my wonderful doctor ordered an MRI to make sure everything was okay,” he said, crediting the early detection to “pure luck.”
In his recovery, Manilow has taken the time to focus on his health, and despite the ongoing battle, he remains optimistic. “I’m proud of everything I’ve given to the show and grateful for all the support I’ve received,” he shared, hinting at his gradual return to the stage later this year. His summer shows and rescheduled performances are still on the calendar, with fans eagerly awaiting his comeback.
While he’s battled numerous health issues over the years, including bronchial pneumonia, a mouth tumor, heart problems, and hip surgery, Manilow’s love for music continues to keep him going. He once said, “If I didn’t do music, I’d be in trouble. It’s really all I’m interested in.”
Manilow’s journey through illness and recovery is a reminder of his resilience, and fans are hopeful that this icon will continue to grace the stage with his legendary voice.
